PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map display device capable of preventing map elements which has been displayed from suddenly disappearing from the map even when the map reduced scale is changed. SOLUTION: In the map display device, a reduction ratio is made smaller while a map is being displayed. When the reduction ratio gets to a prescribed one, a map level is switched over and the content of map information is changed. At this time, roads 24 and 25 indicated in a dashed line and a park 26 are displayed in a tint paler than in the previous map. Thus, when the map level is changed, by making the tint of each map element paler first and then making the map element disappear from the map, the map element does not suddenly disappear from the map.
