PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quicken processing of a double side reading device during single side reading operation. SOLUTION: During double side reading operation, a document 7 is passed to a first document carrying passage 9 by moving a branch guide 8, a read sensor 16 is directed toward the first document carrying passage 9 side and the document 7 is carried on the first document carrying passage 9. Surface of the document 7 is read out by the read sensor 16 and the rear surface is read out by a read sensor 17. During single side reading operation, the sensor 16 is directed toward the second document carrying passage 10 side. When a first sheet is taken in, it is passed through the first document carrying passage 9 by the branch guide 8 as shown on fig. (a). When a second sheet is taken in, it is passed through the second document carrying passage 10 as shown on fig. (b). Consequently, the first sheet is read out by the sensor 17 and the second sheet is read out by the sensor 16. When the document take-in speed is doubled as compared with that during double side reading operation, the number of sheets being processed can be doubled as compared with that during double side reading operation.
