<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal encoding method, a video signal encoding apparatus and a video signal transmitting method by which compression efficiency can be improved and image quality deterioration can be reduced in hierarchically encoding image data. <P>SOLUTION: After data D31, D33 and D35 at respective hierarchical levels are generated by an average value calculation, pixel data which can be restored by arithmetic operation using pixel data at adjacent higher hierarchical levels and pixel data at their own hierarchical levels are thinned, and higher-level hierarchical data are compressively coded with larger numbers of quantization bits. Since the amount of pixel data to be transmitted can be reduced by the thinning, it is possible to suppress an increase in the number of pixels to be transmitted caused by the hierarchical structure. In addition, higher-level hierarchical data are allocated with a larger number of quantization bits, so that degradation in image quality caused by quantization errors at the higher hierarchical levels can be reduced in lower-level hierarchical images. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
