The invention relates to a method for qualifying leather (13) by mapping the defects (D) of the leather (13), using a mapping device (2) comprising means for obtaining a digital image (16) of the leather (13), and by processing the image (16) obtained. Said method comprises at least one phase (c<SUB>1</SUB>, c<SUB>2</SUB>) wherein, following optional previous steps, a statistical algorithm of the generalised likelihood ratio or GLRT is applied to the image (16) of the leather (13). Said algorithm enables the likelihood ratio (?) of the presence of a defect (D) in a first region (R<SUB>1</SUB>) compared to a second region (R<SUB>2</SUB>) to be calculated in an analysis window (F) centred on a given pixel of the image (16) and comprising a mask in at least two regions (R<SUB>1</SUB>, R<SUB>2</SUB>), and to thus obtain a probability image (45) indicating, for each pixel, the value of said likelihood ratio (?). |
