The reel winder, for winding a number of paper or cardboard webs side by side, has a winding bed (1) formed by two carrier rollers for reel cores (2,3) butting against each other. A mechanism pushes the cores in succession on to the winding bed, with a sensor (6) to register the end edge (8) of a winding core. The sensor, on a pivot axis (7), is located at a step (5) in the core laying surface.
