An apparatus for adjusting a ship's propeller and the prime mover driving same, comprises an adjusting member 2 for varying the pitch of the propeller blades and an adjusting member 3 for varying the speed of the prime mover by influencing the centrifugal governor of same and a manoeuvring member 1 acting on said adjusting members (via transmission systems 12, 13), in which, in a speed range above a particular minimum speed of the prime mover, the adjusting member 2 for varying the pitch of the blades is withdrawn from the direct influence of the manoeuvring member 1 and is controlled by an arrangement 15, which regulates the output of the prime mover, or an operating quantity related thereto, by variation of the pitch of the blades in a predetermined relation to the speed of the prime mover. The adjusting member 2 is connected by a rod 4 to a bell crank lever 6 pivoted at 5 and urged by a spring 7 to act in a clockwise (pitch increasing) direction, movement being restricted by a pin 8 on the lever engaging one end of a slot 9 in a rod 10 controlled by a device 11 connected to the transmission system 12. An instrument 15 moves a beam 16 under the influence of member 3, i.e. under the influence of the speed of the prime mover, and under the influence of an instrument 14 which measures the output of the prime mover or an operating quantity related thereto. The transmission system 13 does not influence the speed of the prime mover until the pitch of the blades is higher than that required for full speed. When angle α is exceeded, member 1 acts on 3 to increase the speed of the prime mover until the maximum speed is reached, e.g. at angle #. Since the propeller is set to an increased pitch, the power consumption increases until the output exceeds the predetermined optimum relation to the speed. The instrument 15 then moves beam 16 to the left until right hand end of slot 17 encounters pin 18 so that pin 8 no longer bears against end of slot 9 but moves freely in this slot. The adjusting member 2 is thus withdrawn from the influence of device 11 and is controlled only by instrument 15.
