<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical fiber which reduces both a bending loss and a connection loss while ensuring high rate optical transmission. <P>SOLUTION: An optical fiber according to one aspect of the present invention is made of quartz-based glass and includes a core and a cladding, and the optical fiber is characterized in that a mode field diameter of the optical fiber at a wavelength of 1,310 nm is equal to or larger than 5.4μm, light of a wavelength of 1250 nm is propagated through the optical fiber in a single mode, and a bending loss of the optical fiber with a bending radius of 1mm at the wavelength 1,310 nm is equal to or lower than 1 dB/turn.
