PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting unit and a discharge lamp capable of safely stopping a circuit function by breaking a capacitor with heat of a heat generation component without increasing cost. SOLUTION: A bulb type fluorescent lamp stores a lighting unit 50 lighting an arc tube inside a housing. The lighting unit 50 is equipped with a rectify, a smoothing circuit part, an inverter circuit part with transistors Q1 and Q1, a resonance circuit part, and a preheating circuit part or the like with a resistor element of a positive temperature coefficient, and is structured by a plurality of electronic components. Among the plurality of electronic components, for example, when the bulb type fluorescent lamp is lit in a state of an electrode at the last stage of its life, the transistors Q1, Q2 and the resistor element of the positive temperature coefficient generate heat excessively. Near the transistors Q1, Q2 and the resistor element of the positive temperature coefficient, capacitors C4, C6 capable of breaking with a short mode by heat are arranged.
