PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine controller for avoiding that an intake control valve is brought into an undesired combustion state in the state of being opened and closed in an engine having the intake control valve in an intake passage. SOLUTION: This engine controller comprises the intake control valve 26 installed in the intake passage 20 and switchable between a state of being kept open according to the operating state of the engine and a state of being opened and closed according to the opening and closing timings of the intake valve 17, a first combustion state control means controlling the engine 10 in a first combustion state in such a state that the intake control valve 26 is kept open, and a second combustion state control means controlling the engine 10 in a second combustion state different from the first combustion state in such a state that the intake control valve 26 is opened and closed.
