PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the problems in a conventional variable wavelength laser, to improve reliability and performance, to reduce costs, and to monitor a wavelength by a simpler configuration. SOLUTION: The variable wavelength laser 50 comprises a multiple ring resonator 60 in which two ring resonators 61, 62 made of an annular waveguide having different optical path length each other are connected; an I/O-side waveguide 52 whose one end is connected to the ring resonator 61; a reflection-side waveguide 54 whose one end is connected to the ring resonator 62; a PLC substrate 55 on which the multiple ring resonator 60, the I/O-side waveguide 52, and the reflection-side waveguide 54 are formed; a high reflection film 56 that is provided at one end of the reflection-side waveguide 54; an LD57 connected to the other end of the I/O-side waveguide 52; a film-like heater 62h for changing the resonance wavelength of the multiple ring resonator 60; and mode filters 71-73 for restraining the entry of light in a high-order mode to the multiple resonator 60 and propagating light in a basic mode.
