PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supporting body which has excellent dimensional stability and is nearly free from dimensional change due to environmental change when a magnetic recording medium is formed and by which a high density magnetic recording medium having excellent head touch properties and running durability can be formed by controlling a cupping amount. SOLUTION: The supporting body for the magnetic recording medium is characterized in that layers (an Ma layer and an Mb layer) containing metals or a metal based inorganic compound are formed on both surfaces A and B of a polyester film, wherein when thicknesses of the Ma layer and the Mb layer are denoted as Ma and Mb, respectively, Ma>Mb is satisfied and the ratio (Ma/Mb) of the thicknesses is 1.1 to 10.
