PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which restrains increase in error rate under a low-humidity environment and is excellent in electromagnetic conversion characteristics and traveling durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer, which contains at least a ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent, on a base material. In this case, a ratio (b)/(a) is at least 0.05 and at most 1.0, wherein a is a steel ball abrasion volume of the surface of a magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium at 5°C and at 10% RH, and (b) is a steel ball abrasion volume of a traveling part of the magnetic recording medium at 5°C and at 10% RH when it travels while contacting an Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>/TiC-made column.
