PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens whose angle of view in a wide-angle end state exceeds 70°, which has such a high variable power ratio that a variable power ratio is≥about 4 and has high optical performance, and which is suitable for a video camera or an electronic still camera having a solid-state image sensor or the like as an imaging device. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes, in order from an object side, a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power, a forth lens group G4 having positive refractive power, and a fifth lens group G5 having positive refractive power. Upon zooming from the wide-angle end state W to a telephoto end state T, a distance between the first and second lens groups increases, a distance between the second and third lens groups decreases, a distance between the third and fourth lens groups changes, and a distance between the fourth and fifth lens groups increases in an infinity focusing state.
