PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound useful for dyes, medicines, agrochemicals and electronic materials, etc. and a silver halide photosensitive material reduced in fogging, desensitization and remaining color, having high sensitivity and excellent in sharpness and image quality. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by general formula (I) [wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>7</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a substituent; X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>are each independently -C(R<SP>8</SP>)= or -N= and R<SP>8</SP>is a hydrogen atom or a substituent, wherein either one of X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>is -N= and X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>are not simultaneously -N= and at least one of R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>is a group having a water-soluble group].
