The invention relates to a hydraulic threaded bolt clamping device and to methods for tightening large screws by means of said hydraulic threaded bolt clamping device. The inventive device comprises a pressurised medium supply; a pressurised medium connection; a cylinder supported on a machine part to be clamped by means of a threaded bolt and a nut; at least one piston which is guided into the cylinder in a sealed manner, periodically subjected to pressure, and supported on an insert nut screwed onto the threaded end of the threaded bolt; a control device for controlling the pressurised medium supply to the threaded bolt clamping device and for stopping the pressurised medium supply once a nominal pressure corresponding to the nominal prestress is reached; an input device for inputting a nominal screw clamping force or an input device for inputting a residual nominal screw prestress force or a corresponding nominal pressure of the pressurised medium supply; a measuring device for measuring the relative displacement of the threaded end of the threaded bolt in relation to the cylinder; and an evaluation device for determining the residual screw prestress following the pressure release of the threaded bolt clamping device.
