The invention relates to novel 4-arylpiperidine derivatives and organic or inorganic acid addition salts thereof. The compounds of the invention and the salts thereof display pharmacological activity towards the central nervous system, particularly antidepressant activity. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising a 4-arylpiperidine derivative of the invention or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, as well as a process for the preparation of said derivatives.
