The charger (12) includes a rechargeable battery and a switching power pack for charging a portable electric power tool (10). The switching power pack also functions as a charging capacitor for the rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery and switching power pack are arranged in a housing (14), and connected to the portable electric power tool through a connecting cable (16). A load adapter is used for electrically and mechanically connecting the charger to an AC source. An independent claim is included for the portable electric power tool.
