PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an organic electroluminescent element excellent in durability without attenuating emission luminance even by long-term drive, and to provide an organic electroluminescent element obtained by the manufacturing method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the organic electroluminescent element wherein layers are deposited by vapor deposition, in at least one layer of a charge injection layer, a charge transport layer, and the light emitting layer which are included in the organic compound layer, the method comprises a cleaning step for decreasing the content of aromatic hydrocarbon, alicyclic hydrocarbon, and aliphatic hydrocarbon, wherein the optical band gap (Eg) is 400 nm or less, or the content of aromatic hydrocarbon, alicyclic hydrocarbon, and aliphatic hydrocarbon wherein the molecular weight is 300-750 to less than 5 mass% per one layer, and a deposition step.
