PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a width narrowing construction method for a shield machine, which enables smooth width narrowing construction, and which can minimize deformation of peripheral ground. SOLUTION: The shield machine 1 comprises a main body block 3, right and left excavating blocks 5 and 7 movable in the width direction, and right and left construction blocks 9 and 11 movable in the width direction. The main body block 3 is composed of a front body part 3a, an intermediate body part 3b and a rear body part 3c. The right and left excavating blocks 5 and 7 and the right and left construction blocks 9 and 11 are installed in such a manner as to be movable in the width direction via a width narrowing mechanism 21 and a width narrowing mechanism 23, respectively. When the width narrowing construction method for the shield machine is practiced, a filler such as mortar is discharged into a gap, made between the ground and each of the blocks, from earth removing pipes 26a, 26b, 27a and 27b, and injected into the gap, along with the movement of the right and left construction blocks 9 and 11 or the right and left excavating blocks 5 and 7 in the width narrowing direction.
