PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transport device capable of transporting an object to the desired position even in a case a force such as back tension is applied to a transport roller from the object transported such as a recording sheet of paper. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is structured so that an at-stop retention current I is fed to an LF motor 54 even after the transport is ended when a recording sheet P for image formation is transported bit by bit in a prescribed amount repetitively, and further, this retention current I is updated so as to become the at-normal time optimum value by feeding back the control error of the stop position generated after transportation of the sheet P. In order to preclude the stop position error when a periodic torque variation is generated in the transport roller 50 owing to cogging etc. of the LF motor 54, a periodic variation phase center value D is stored in a register 87, and when image is formed, determination is made for the phase difference Cdd between the phase Dc of periodic variation and the periodic variation phase center value D when the current feed control to the LF motor 54 is ended, and the current feed control end position is corrected so that a longer delay is generated as the phase difference Cdd is smaller.
