PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relatively simple rotary knob structure capable of meeting regulations for inner projections without impairing knob operability. SOLUTION: The rotary knob, which is positioned to project from a mounting surface, comprises a first knob member connected to a rotation means and a second knob member fitted over the first knob member in such a manner as to be capable of sliding relative to the first knob member only longitudinally without relative rotation. At least either the first or second knob member has a means for normally controlling sliding and for canceling the control of sliding at the application of a predetermined load to the second knob member so that the amount of projection of the second knob member from the mounting surface is not more than a predetermined value.
