PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely adjust an inclination of an image on a recording member in a transfer position while making the most use of advantages of a belt transfer system. SOLUTION: A transfer device 4 is provided with: a plurality of stretching rolls 6 (for example, 6a and 6b); a transfer transport belt 8 rotatably stretched around these stretching rolls 6; an elastic transfer roll 7 for generating a transfer electric field which is made of an elastic member having a lower hardness than a portion of an image carrier 1 facing a surface part of the elastic transfer roll and which is disposed in press-contact with a rear side of the transfer transport belt 8, the transfer transport belt 8 being held between the elastic transfer roll 7 and the image carrier 1; and an image parallelism adjustment mechanism 9 which gives a difference in extent of biting between both axial ends of the elastic transfer roll 7 to generate a twist in the elastic roll 7 and causes this twist reaction force to act upon a recording material 5 through the transfer transport belt 8 to adjust the parallelism of the image in a width direction orthogonal to a transport direction of the recording material 5.
