PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent wear of an engagement element at a time of idling and surely make the engagement element stand by in an engagement element type clutch built in an engine start device for a vehicle. SOLUTION: Rollers 8 retained by a retainer 7 between an inner ring 5 and an outer ring 6 of the engagement type clutch 4 are engaged with and disengaged from the inner ring 5 and the outer ring 6 by an electromagnetic switch 11 attracting an armature 15 engaging with the retainer 7 to a rotor 14 by electromagnetic force. Consequently, when the engine starts and the outer ring 6 idles, the rollers 8 are surely put under non-contact condition with the idling outer ring 6 to prevent wear thereof and are surely made to stand by.
