875,679. Nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 14, 1959 [Sept. 18, 1958], No. 29857/58. Class 39(4). In a gas cooled graphite moderated nuclear reactor 1, a flow of gas of a temperature higher than that of the bottom portion of the moderator core 2 is led through ducts 14 so that the operating temperature of the lower portion is raised and a more even distribution of temperature throughout the core is attained. The ducts 14 may be existing flattening- or control-rod ducts. As shown, coolant gas which has passed upwardly through ducts 12 is sucked down through the ducts 14 and via pipe 16 to join the main gas stream between the heat exchanger 4 and the blower 6, after cooling if desired. Cold coolant gas or a neutron absorbing material may be introduced through pipe 19. Alternatively, externally heated gas or gas from the fuel channels may be passed through the ducts 14. Specification 875,678 is referred to. |
