PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a very compact zoom lens system having a high optical performance compatible with highly increased pixels with constitution of the small number of lenses, in constitution of three groups of zoom lenses consisting of, in order from an object side, a negative 1st lens group preceded by a negative lens (the lens nearest to the object side is negative), a positive 2nd lens group, and a positive 3rd lens group. SOLUTION: In the zoom lens system which is constituted of, in order from the object side, the negative 1st lens group, a diaphragm, the positive 2nd lens group, and the 3rd lens group, and which varies power by moving the 1st lens group and the 2nd lens group in the direction of the optical axis, the 1st lens group is constituted of, in order from the object side, two lenses of a 1st negative lens and a 2nd positive lens; the 2nd lens group consists of a cemented lens obtained by joining all of the three lenses, a 3rd positive lens, a 4th negative lens, and a 5th positive lens located in order from the object side; and the 3rd lens group consists of a 6th single positive lens.
