PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an automatic transmission capable of shortening shift time, by improving shift quality in shifting, by smoothly increasing a turbine rotating speed, by continuously, smoothly and surely switching operation of a sub-shift mechanism and a main shift mechanism, in a power-on down-shift for switching a shift stage of the whole automatic transmission so as to jump over to a plurality of stages of low speed shift stages from a maximum speed shift stage. SOLUTION: In a power-on 5→2 down-shift, torque capacity of a direct coupled clutch 60 and a 3-4 clutch 42 is reduced, and the torque capacity of the 3-4 clutch 42 is set lower than the torque capacity of the direct coupled clutch 60, and the sub-shift mechanism 5 is first started for shifting by sliding the direct coupled clutch 60, and afterwards, the main shift mechanism 4 is started for shifting by sliding the 3-4 clutch 42 by reaction when a sub-shift one-way clutch 62 is locked.
