PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer, by which the carboxyl group-containing acrylic copolymer having highly precisely controlled copolymerization composition and mol.wt. especially required for optical materials and having excellent handleability can be produced in relatively simple polymerization and washing operations. SOLUTION: This method for producing the copolymer, comprising copolymerizing a monomer mixture containing a carboxyl group-containing acrylic monomer and one or more other acrylic monomers capable of being copolymerized with the same to produce (i) the carboxyl group-containing acrylic monomer unit-containing copolymer (A), is characterized by comprising the following two of a polymerization process (I) and a washing process (II). (I) The polymerization process: a process for copolymerizing the monomer mixture in a specific organic solvent (B) to obtain a copolymer slurry. (II) The washing process: a washing process for supplying the copolymer slurry obtained in the polymerization process (I) to steam-strip at a temperature of 50 to 150°C. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
