The invention comprises alkyl titanium halides of formulae R-Ti(Hal)3 and (CH3)2-Ti-(Hal)2/t in which R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1-18 carbon atoms and Hal represents fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine. They may be prepared by reacting a halide of tetravalent titanium with a metalloalkyl compound of lithium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, aluminium or lead. The dimethyl titanium dihalides may be prepared by reacting monomethyl titanium trihalides with a methyl compound of lithium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, aluminium or lead: if desired the monomethyl titanium trihalide may be used in the reaction mixture in which it is prepared. The preparation may be carried out in solution in, for example, hexane, haptane, octane, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, methylcyclohexane, gasoline fractions, Fischer-Tropsch fractions, benzene, toluene, xylene, ch.orobenzene or methylene chloride, and preferably in an inert atmopshere (nitrogen or carbon dioxide). The desired product may be isolated by sublimation in vacuo, or, in the cases where organoaluminium or organo lead compounds are used, a complexing agent may be added (e.g., the chlorides and bromides of sodium, potassium or calcium, di-isoamyl, dihexyl, diphenyl, or dichloro-diphenyl ether or triphenyl phosphine) and the alkyl titanium halide removed by sublimation or filtration. |
