A control method for an optical disc recording and reproducing apparatus is provided to quickly and accurately discriminate a kind of the optical disc by accurately detecting a distance between a surface and a recording surface of the optical disc. A surface and a recording surface of an optical disc are recognized while objective lens are moved through an actuator(302,304,306,310,312). When the surface and the recording surface of the optical disc are recognized, input voltage values supplied to the actuator are stored(308,314). The stored voltage values are substituted for a modeling formula of the actuator, and real positions of the objective lens when the surface and the recording surface of the optical disc are recognized are calculated(316). A kind of the optical disc is discriminated through a distance between real positions of the surface and the recording surface of the optical disc(318).
