PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master cylinder capable of discharging chips of a circumferential groove well. SOLUTION: The master cylinder has a cylinder body 15 of a cylindrical shape with a bottom having a delivery passage of a braking liquid and a supply passage 58 communicated with a reservoir; a piston 18 slidably inserted into the cylinder body 15 and forming a pressure chamber 84 for feeding liquid pressure to the delivery passage with the cylinder body 15; and a sealing member 56 provided in a circumferential groove 47 formed on the cylinder body 15, having an inner periphery slide-contacted with the piston 18 and capable of sealing a clearance between the supply passage 58 and the pressure chamber 84. A chip parting groove 101 is formed on the circumferential groove 47 at an intermediate position in an axial direction and at a position not affecting the sealability of the sealing member 56.
