PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission apparatus the optical module of which is downsized and highly sophisticated and which realizes a flexible countermeasure against revision of an external control interface specification and to provide an optical characteristic control method thereof.

SOLUTION: The optical transmission apparatus including a control section 11 for controlling an optical characteristic on the basis of monitor information of the transmission/reception optical module 1 for converting an electric signal into an optical signal and converting the optical signal into the electric signal includes an external host device 2 or an external memory 3 for storing a program coping with various status information items of the transmission/reception optical module 1 via the control section 11 and an external interface.
