PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering control device for a vehicle capable of preventing degradation in the steering responsiveness of the vehicle when a mode is changed to a steering mode using a cable, because a driver is able to know the abnormal elongation of the cable on the basis of accurate cable elongation detection for previously taking proper measures. SOLUTION: This steering control device for the vehicle includes a backup cable mechanism 7 (cable column) for mechanically connecting a steering wheel 1 (steering portion) operated by the driver and a steering actuator 11 (turning steering portion) which turns turning wheels 12 by backup cables 16, 17, and provided with a cable elongation determination device (Fig. 3) for deciding the cable elongation on the basis of a rotation position of the steering wheel 1 in which the backup cables 16, 17 are elongated to its maximum when the steering wheel 1 is rotated to right and left sides.
