PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form three-dimensional ultrasound images efficiently based on volume data by controlling transmission and reception of ultrasound. SOLUTION: When a ray 38 starting at a point of view VP is set to travel in the positive direction of the X-axis, frame data are acquired in an order necessary for voxel function, or in the ascending order of frame numbers. The direction of the ray is determined from view point position data (or an X-axis component of a unit ray vector), and a scan of ultrasonic beams is implemented in the ascending order of the frame numbers by controlling a two-dimensional array oscillator in a three-dimensional probe 10. Then echo data is acquired corresponding to the order of the scan. On the other hand, when the ray 38 starting at the point of view VP is set to travel in the negative direction of the X-axis, the frame data is acquired in the order necessary for the voxel arithmetic, or in the descending order of the frame numbers.
