PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for distinguishing shigellae from other bacteria and detecting the shigellae. SOLUTION: A solid culture medium comprises at least one kind of saccharide selected from glucose, mannitol, trehalose and L-arabinose, lysine, a pH indicator and a color developing substrate developing a color with aβ-glucosidase-positive bacterium or a solid culture medium comprises at least one kind of saccharide selected from sucrose, ribitol and raffinose, xylose, a pH indicator and a color developing substrate developing a color with aβ-glucuronidase-positive bacterium. The former makes various species of shigellae appear as colonies with color tones different from those of the other bacteria and the latter makes Shigella sonnei appear as the colonies with color tones different from those of the other bacteria, respectively.
