<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating waste plastics which separates chlorine-containing plastics from the waste plastics by a relatively inexpensive method and can improve the reduction of the chlorine content of the waste plastics. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for treating the waste plastics for separating/recovering chlorine-free plastics from the waste plastics containing the chlorine-containing plastics, the waste plastics are separated into high-specific gravity plastics and low-specific gravity plastics by specific gravity difference, the low-specific gravity plastics are heated at a prescribed temperature to fragment the chlorine-containing plastics, and the fragmented chlorine-containing plastics are separated/removed to recover the chlorine-free plastics.
