PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sense the end of a medium quickly and accurately. SOLUTION: A medium end sensing device is equipped with a scanning carriage 38 mounted with a media sensor 50 and reciprocating in the prescribed directions and an end sensing means to move the carriage 38 in the prescribed directions and sense the end across the width of a recording sheet of paper P in conformity to the sensing signal given by the media sensor 50, wherein the end sensing means moves the carriage 38 at a first speed remaining low around one end of the sheet P and senses existence or none of sheet P with the media sensor 50, and after sensing the end of the sheet P on the basis of the sensing signal, moves the carriage 38 at a second speed higher than the first toward either of the scanning ends.
