A seatbelt pretensioner control system tightens the belt in response to at least the rate of change 3 of steering angle 1 of a vehicle. The steering rate threshold at which tensioning is applied may decrease with vehicle speed 2. The control system may calculate a tension based on both steering angle and vehicle speed 4 and steering rate and vehicle speed 5 and apply the higher 6 of the two forces. The applied tension may be maintained for a predetermined time after the measured values have dropped below their threshold levels. A different tension may be applied for each successive threshold that is exceeded. |
