In an elevator apparatus, hoistway equipment requiring maintenance and inspection work is arranged at an upper portion in the hoistway. Arranged at the upper portion in the hoistway is a working platform that serves as a scaffold when performing maintenance and inspection work on the hoistway equipment. The working platform is arranged so as to avoid interference with the car when the car moves to the uppermost movement position in the hoistway and to overlap the car within the vertical projection plane.
