A light emitting diode chip having a color converting material layer for use in an AC power operation and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to realize a white light by employing a fluorescent substance included in the color converting material layer. Plural light emitting cells(28) are formed on a substrate(21). A color converting material layer(37) covers the light emitting cells and contains a fluorescent substance. Metal wires(39) connect the light emitting cells thereto electrically. The respective light emitting cells include a first conductive semiconductor layer(25), a second conductive semiconductor layer(29), and an active layer(27). The second conductive semiconductor layer is located on a region of the first conductive semiconductor layer. The active layer is disposed between the first and the second conductive semiconductor layers. The metal wires interconnect electrically the first and the second conductive semiconductor layers of the adjacent light emitting cells.
