In an elevator apparatus, a main rope group has a first main rope for suspending an elevator car and a first counterweight and a second main rope for suspending the elevator car and the counterweight. A deflection pulley group includes a first elevator car side deflection pulley for guiding the first main rope from a drive sheave to the elevator car, a first counterweight side deflection pulley for guiding the first main rope from the drive sheave to the first counterweight, a second elevator car side deflection pulley for guiding the second main rope from the drive sheave to the elevator car, and a second counterweight side deflection pulley for guiding the second main rope from the drive sheave to the second counterweight. The positions at which the elevator car is suspended by the first and the second main rope are separated from each other in a vertical projection plane.
