A method of initialisation of an optical transmitter adapted to provide optical output power as a function of a current through the transmitter, and wherein a substantially linear relationship exists between the current and the optical output power for at least an interval above a reference current limit, while a non-linear relationship exists for at least an interval below said reference current limit, comprises the steps of applying to the transmitter a DC current modulated with an AC modulation current, causing an optical mean power and an optical AC power to be emitted, measuring the optical output power and a level of distortion thereof due to said non-linear relationship, setting the modulation current to a lower limit, adjusting the optical mean power to a level which results in a predefined level of said distortion, and defining a minimum allowed mean power value as said mean power level multiplied by a predefined factor. <IMAGE> |
