[Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] In a universal joint, Fig. 7, members P1, P2 each contain a pair of bearings R. Each bearing R has an outer race comprising a thin steel sleeve 1 having an end portion 4, and has a washer 10 interposed between the portion 4 and rollers 8 which are retained in position by a turned-over portion 16 of the sleeve 1. A journal B abuts the washer 10 and serves as an inner race for the rollers 8. The end portion 4 of the sleeve is formed so that a flat portion 7 is engaged by the washer 10 and an annular portion is contacted by a resilient split ring C, held in a groove c of an outer member A, said ring C serving to retain the bearing R in a bore b of the member A. The washer 10 may be a spring type as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and may have holes or segments provided as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, so as to contain lubricant. A disc may be provided as an alternative to the washer 10.</p> |
