A TRANSMIT DIVERSITY SCHEME FOR A CDMA SYSTEM USES SPACE-TIME CODES TO OBTAIN DIVERSITY GAIN. COMBINED DIVERSITY SIGNALS ENCODED ACCORDING TO A SPACE-TIME CODE ARE RECEIVED AT THE MOBILE TERMINAL (100) DURING FIRST AND SECOND SYMBOL PERIODS (S1, S2). THE MOBILE TERMINAL INCLUDES A FIRST RAKE RECEIVER (210) MATCHED TO A FIRST TRANSMIT ANTENNA (16) AND A SECOND RAKE RECEIVER MATCHED TO A SECOND TRANSMIT ANTENNA (18). THE FIRST RAKE RECEIVER (210) COMBINES MULTIPATH ECHOES (R111) OF THE FIRST COMBINED SIGNAL DURING THE FIRST SYMBOL PERIOD TO OBTAIN A FIRST VALUE (A1,1) AND COMBINES THE MULTIPATH ECHOES (R2,I) CORRESPONDING TO THE SECOND COMBINED SIGNAL DURING THE SECOND SYMBOL PERIOD TO OBTAIN A SECOND VALUE (A1,2). THE SECOND RAKE RECEIVER COMBINES MULTIPATH ECHOES (RI,1) CORRESPONDING TO THE FIRST COMBINED SIGNAL TO OBTAIN A THIRD VALUE (A2,1) AND COMBINES MULTIPATH ECHOES (R2,I) CORRESPONDING TO THE SECOND COMBINED SIGNAL TO OBTAIN A FOURTH VALUE (A2,2). A DECODER (252) DECODES THE FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH VALUES (A1,1, A1,2, A, A212) TO OBTAIN FINAL ESTIMATES OF THE TRANSMITTED SYMBOLS4
