<PICT:0860630/III/1> A reactor divided by a vertical partition into two zones which are connected at the top and bottom and comprising means to introduce finely dispersed reactant or other gas into the lower part of the first of said zones to effect circulation of liquid between said zones, is characterized in that one or more vertical slots are provided in the upper part of said partition, said slot or slots being positioned in relation to the side wall of the vessel, or a baffle being provided, so that liquid immediately after circulating through said slot, is deflected in the horizontal plane. In Figs. 1-3 (not shown) the zones comprise major and minor segments of a cylindrical reactor of, e.g., 1 ft. diameter and 22 ft. in height, and a single slot is provided. Fig. 6 shows a plan of an arrangement of baffles and slots formed in the upper portion of a cylindrical partition in a cylindrical reactor of e.g. 2-20 ft. diameter. The liquid enters through slots 19 and is deflected by angled baffles 16, 17 before passing downwardly into the partition. The baffles could be curved rather than angular. The resistance of the slot or slots to liquid flow is preferably from 1-4 times the sum of the flow resistances from all other sources, to secure adequate deaeration without excessive resistance. |
