b ,b -Pentamethylene butyrolactone is prepared by reacting a di-silver salt of cyclohexane diacetic acid with iodine at a temperature of between about 150 DEG C. and about 170 DEG C. in the presence of nitro benzene. Cyclohexane diacetic acid di-silver salt is prepared by reacting cyclohexanone with ethyl cyanoacetate in the presence of ammonia to form the ammonium salt of 4,4-pentamethylene-3,5-dicyanglutarimide, hydrolysing this with sulphuric acid to give cyclohexane diacetic acid and forming the di-silver salt.
