<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical path shifting device capable of dividing an effective region of an optical path and driving the divided regions respectively. <P>SOLUTION: An optical path shifting element is provided with a liquid crystal layer that is held between at least two opposing transparent substrates and a chiral-smectic C phase having homeo-tropic orientation can be formed and electrodes which apply electric field in a horizontal direction within the liquid crystal layer. The effective region, in which the optical path goes through, is divided into a plurality of regions and the plurality of optical path shifting elements, in which electrodes are formed only for the portions corresponding to the divided regions, are laminated and the boundary line of each region is arranged so that the boundary lines are matched with each other when viewed from the direction in which light beams pass. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
