PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and surely read an image reading face by automatically sensing a height of an arranged article and automatically adjusting a focal distance by moving a lens unit according to its height. SOLUTION: Four sets of photo sensors 6a, 6b, 6c, and 6d are arranged at designated intervals in respective height directions, and they sense the height of delivery articles placed on a base. A moving amount of the lens unit is determined on the basis of the sensed results of the delivery article of respective photo sensors, and auto-adjustment of a focal point is thereby carried out. When the lens unit is movably controlled according to a determined moving amount, a CCD sensor 22 reads an image from the image reading face of the delivery article via the lens unit.
