PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for preparing a silicon nitride powder at a low cost, wherein the silicon nitride powder has a high nitriding rate and a high alpha-conversion rate, has few impurities and is made of particulates. SOLUTION: In the method for preparing the silicon nitride powder through a reduction-nitriding method, a composite particle powder is used as a starting material, wherein the composite particle powder comprises a silica particle powder whose surface is coated with a surface modifier, and a carbon powder is further deposited onto the surface of the surface modifier-coated silica particle.
