PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device capable of moving an elevator car by easily and relatively changing mass of a counterweight and capable of safely moving the car. SOLUTION: The counterweight 4 is divided, and one part thereof is used as an adjustment weight 4b having mass one second or more of the rated loading amount of an elevator and movably arranged with the predetermined interval under the other weight 4a. This elevator device is provided with a cable body 20 possible to be locked with an upper part of the adjustment weight 4b in one end thereof, a suspension support point for movably suspending an intermediate part of the cable body 20 at the predetermined height from the bottom of a hoistway near a vertical projection surface of the counterweight 4, and a hoisting means, namely a chain block 28, connected to the other end of the cable body 20 to hoist the adjustment weight 4b through the cable 20. The adjustment weight 4b is hoisted by the chain block 28 to make mass of the counterweight 5 smaller than mass of the car 2, and in this condition, a brake of a winding machine is released to move the car 2 downward.
