Grass is dried in a dry chamber by heat supply and water vapor escapes. Pyrolysis is carried out under air seal in the pyrolysis chamber in an air and/or oxygen-free atmosphere by heat supply, and coke (6) and pyrolysis gas are developed. The coke is cooled under air and oxygen termination in the cooling chamber (7). The pyrolysis gas is transmitted without cooling to a pyrolysis chamber (4) and burned with a burner for liquid or gaseous fuels. The burning efficiency of the burner is used for complete drying and coking of the grass. The combustion energy of the exhaust gas stream is used for drying the grass, and a conveyer system is used to a continuously transport the grass, coke and solid intermediate products. The speed of the conveyer system is adapted to the characteristics of the grass. The pyrolysis gas is exhausted by compressed air by venturi effect and serves as combustion air. The coke as final product falls at a gas permeable belt end of the treatment device into a container and the pyrolysis gas is obtained between the upper and lower strand of the belt into a tub. The mixture from the pyrolysis gas and air arriving by the venturi-nozzles are introduced into the combustion chamber (10). An independent claim is included for a device for the thermal treatment of grass.
